Beat-Mis (Beat-Mass) is a record I picked up in a charityshop in the Dutch
city of
Den Bosch about 9 years ago. The cover alone was worth 50 cents to me and
the
youth choir singing on this lp was from the village of Someren, close to to
the village
i grew up in (in the catholic south of The Netherlands).
Moreover this is a "Beat" mass, there's a nerdy looking guitarband on the
cover which
seems rather progressive for a religious record from the mid 60s.
Certainly not something you come across everyday.
The music turned out to be quite charming, the choir is singing well known
catholic songs with lively enthausiasm which never fails to put a smile on
my face.... As I am not raised with any religion I heard these songs for the first time on this record. Only later I found out some of my friends know all of them and some have even sung them in church! So I never heard these songs in the "usual" fashion, which is probably for the best because I think it's the driving rhythm of the beat band that make these songs so catchy. Over the years this Lp has provoked some very mixed reactions in my circles (Art acedemy students and the Art scene), on the few occasions I played a track as a dj some people had pretty traumatic memories of these songs..... So don't take it too seriously and don't forget to make the flowers sing!!! |
Beat-Mis is een plaat die ik zo'n 9 jaar geleden gevonden heb in een kringloopwinkel in Den Bosch. Alleen de hoes was me al de volle 50 cent waard en het is gezongen door een jeugdkoortje uit het brabantse dorp Someren, vlakbij het dorp waar ik zelf ben opgegroeid. Bovendien gaat het hier om een "Beat" mis, er staat een sullig uitziende gitaarband op de hoes wat mij voor een elpee met religieuze muziek uit het midden van de jaren 60 redelijk vooruitstrevend lijkt. Zoiets kom je niet dagelijks tegen. De muziek blijkt ook nog eens erg charmant te zijn, het koor zingt bekende katholieke liedjes als "Laat zingen de bloemen" en "Wij zijn samen onderweg" met aanstekelijk enthausiasme waar ik erg vrolijk van word. Nu ben ikzelf niet met het geloof opgegroeid, op deze plaat hoorde ik deze liedjes eigenlijk voor het eerst en ik kwam er pas later achter dat enkele van mijn vrienden en kennissen ze allemaal kennen of zelfs nog gezongen hebben! Ik heb deze muziek dus nooit in de "normale" uitvoering gehoord, en dat is waarschijnlijk maar goed ook, want ik denk dat het door het stuwende ritme van de beat-groep komt dat de nummers zo catchy en vrolijk zijn.... Deze plaat heeft in mijn omgeving (Kunstacademie en Kunstmilieu) altijd erg wisselende reacties losgemaakt, de paar keer dat ik een nummer als discjockey gedraaid heb blijken nogal wat mensen traumatische herrinneringen aan deze nummers te hebben, je moet er dus wel de humor van in kunnen zien.... |
