GOC 14

"Mano a mano", a bandname that results in too many hits on google, almost all tango related by the way, but I can't find any connection to the duo/band that we're hearing here. I've placed a small teaser track for those of you with a low speed connection: Teaser track

GOC13

From the same cassette as last few posts: De Keng. The only thing I could find out about these guys is that the bandname is correctly spelled like this. They're playing heavy Dutch language rock, live at The Ekkel Horizontaal talkshow somewhere february 1993

GOC 12 The Ramjets

The Ramjets were quite popular for a few years round 1988. They won the third price in "De Grote Prijs Van Nederland" that year. Three guys and a girl, with guitar sounds somewhere in between The Shadows (but faster) and the Bonanza TV-tune.
They also appeared in "The Night of the Nutrock"

GOC 10

During the late seventies and early eighties there was this psychedelically presented radioshow in Holland called The Superclean Dreammachine. There were a lot of album premieres presented, playing almost the complete album, but with the tracks in a different order. Every once in a while unreleased recordings appaered, like this one of Rick Wakeman and The royal Philharmonic Orchestra, playing excerpts from The Legends of King Arthur and The six wives of Henry VIII. It was the first solo-thing I heard of Rick Wakeman and it made me interested and I went looking for this record. I've never found it, for the official release The Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table is a complete other work. Unfortunately in those days I only had a cheap mono-recorder to work with. Trnasferring the tape later only made things worse, but until I find a better copy I want to keep it:

GOC 8

Yes, that's right GOC 7 is missing. That's because for several reasons I'm posting some of the transferred cassettes to the splusp group only, or not at all...

The following recording comes from Ekkel Horizontaal an almost daily dutch radio talk show with live music presented by the Ekkel brothers in the early nineties. I was a frequent listener and taper of that show. Later when the program had disappaered from air, I compiled cassettes with only the live performances.

G.O.C. 6

Picture: Mogauwane

I understand if you don't feel like downloading this complete project, but this episode is certainly worth a listen. There's another reason why I want you to listen to it: to tell me who these whistle-players are. I got this tape from a fellow-student ten years ago who lost the original LP in the train. So I only know the album was called "Penny Whistles of Africa" I can't make heads or tales of the hilariously edited anouncement. Can you?

I've placed a photograph of Mogauwane here only because it was the only black penny- or tin whistle player I could find, amongst louds of Irish culture.

The only information I can give you about this kind of music is that: during fifties South African record companies were scouting for penny whistle players on the street, to record them together with a professional jazz-orchestra.

G.O.C. 5

Some cassettes with pasted radio- and TV-pieces are complete radioshows themselves. I recommend this one especially.

Bits of paper scribbled on and folded inside the case

Of course we all had friends that were more than happy to record their valuable albums on cassette for you, like we did the same for them. They didn't want to spoil the standard cassette sleeve with their lousy handwriting, so the tracklist was scribbled on a bit of paper and folded inside the case so you could copy it nicely later, which of course rarely happened.

ouch!

Most of the material on these ones I have either on vinyl, CD or as mp3 by now. Still it hurts throwing them away...

Goodbye, old cassettes 2

I notice that I've become a bit spoiled by all the music I've discovered on the internet the last few years. A lot of the cassettes contain music that I hardly find exciting any more. However, still that leaves a lot to be transferred, like this Skokiaan collage. I recorded a special on Dutch radio somewhere in the eighties filled with all kinds of covers of this song. For reasons unclear to me now I transferred only 17 minutes of it to this cassette, without writing down the performers after which I deleted the other cassette. I still haven't found all the recordings back that were played in that show.

Goodbye, old cassettes 1

I knew it had to come this far sooner or later: saying goodbye to my old cassettes. I discovered that some of them are deteriorating rapidly, so I've started a huge project: going through all hundreds and hundreds of them and digitizing the ones with things I like to keep for burning onto a high quality DVD-R. I will post most of them here. There's no system, for I just transfer cassettes that I'm in the mood for listening to at that moment.
We'll kick off with one of the many compilations for use in the car, while cleaning the house, etc...
Things like: Bozoura, ELO, Ray Charles, The Spinners, Wild Cherry, Booker T & the MG's, Ram Jam, Mungo Jerry, Harry Belafonte, Sonny & Cher, Kraftwerk, David Bowie, The Move, Earth and Fire, Catherine Valente, Ramses Shaffy, etc.

It's very painfull; if there's anyone who knows an old cassette orphanage, please let me know. I'll send them over. But otherwise I'm afraid they're going to be cremated...

Composer's ABC at Radio Zwolle

This portrait liturally consists of music. It's sheetmusic from nearby and a girl's face when one takes a few steps back. Jurriaan Andriessen (1951-1991) spent 5 years of his live working on it. His aim was to beat the computer. Of course a computer can compose a drawing out of music notation, but would it sound as beautifull as Jurriaan's 53 piano pieces here?

You can hear unique recordings of this music at my program this afternoon, in the first episode of a composer's alphabet.
Music of Andriessen, Anderson (Leroy), Albinoni, Albéniz, Antheil, Achterkamp, Ansink, Akkerman, Alkema and that strange productive cat named Anonymous...
