1. The Beatle Tour continues

Penny Lane

On july 23d 1987 I visited Liverpool and did the Beatle Tour. I was carrying a Sony TCS-470 with me and recorded most of it. Part one was included in week 30 of the 52 weeks project last year. This second part is available only for limited time, so if you want to hear my exclusive interview with the barber of Penny Lane, be quick!

2. Dutch cities (3)

Vangrail - Amsterdam
What a pity, Amsterdam! Still I love you immensely.

3. Splogman sings:

Djembé fola makkasi

march 22-25

March 25 2005
Jongerenkoor Vinkeveen - Lam Gods (Agnus Dei) (offline)
Another one of my favorites. This is an "Agnus Dei" in Dutch and in Brubeck-style.
A singing monk - Liedje (little song)
Another treasure found in the box full of real to reals left by that curate of the Catholic Church in Vinkeveen.

March 24 2005
Jongerenkoor Vinkeveen - Zorgeloos als kinderen (offline)
I'm cleaning out my HD and I'm finding a lot of stuff I intended to use in 52 weeks. This recording I found on an old real to real tape that once belonged to one of the former priests in Vinkeveen. This must be "somewhere" in the 1970-es and is one of the songs that I liked as a child. more jongerenkoor Vinkeveen

Michiel & Jan - Jam session 1988, part 1 (offline)
Another recording from my Antwerp period. This must have been autumn 1988. I met this other Dutchman, early 20, just like me, busker just like me, had a cheap appartment near the river Schelde just like me, slightly mad just like me, had a part-time job as a dish washer unlike me and had followed an art study, unlike me. For a short period we spent a lot of time together, drinking coffee and beer, jamming along either in one of our appartments or "at the dock of the bay" at sunset. I wonder what he is doing now...

March 23 2005
The Concertina Record: Bach, Liberty Bell a.o. played on concertina
(still online)
march 22 2005
Roel Slofstra -Mata Hari (offline)
This is a song in the Frysian language which is spoken in Frysln, one of the Netherlands northern provinces. Mata Hari was born there. Mata Hari propaganda cards

this weekend's splusp selection

march 19 2005 Splogman on "Strangely Familiar" (news)

offline

Maybe this is going to be a tradition. Who knows? Anyway, it's the second time that De Zwervende Keien are making a saturday evening compilation with a little help of a bottle of red wine...
Popchoir The Muzerie - The Sea (Twarres)
Old recording, posted before in the pre-52weeks time. I was behind the keyboard and conducting the choir with my face.
De Zwervende Keien - Java (rehearsal summer 1995)
Toby Rix - Performance on Dutch radio program "Music Hall" 1990-ies.
Yes, you might call this a Dutch Spike Jones (but slightly different of course :-)
Pupils - Ik heb talent (I'm talented)
Last thursday when I was recording the children's favourite songs in one of my music classes, three girls asked if they I could record this song that they had learned from another teacher.
Pupils Geert Grote School - Auditions for the solo on House of the Rising Sun
This is the splup group's direct influence on music lessons in Zwolle. The result of one of our discussions!
Splogman & pupils Geert Grote School - Noorse Bruiloft (Norwegian Wedding)
The pupils on the this recording are now former Geert Grote School Kids
Umeå Akademiska Kör - Vaarvindar_friska After posting my version of "Norwegian wedding" in the splusp group with the question if this was truly a Norwegian song, we found out with the help of our Finnish friends that this almost certainly is a Swedish song: "This is the song that we (especially the choirs of the universities Lund and Uppsala) sing to greet the spring at 'Valborg' (the last day of April)".
More mp3s of this choir at at: Umeå Akademiska Kör (Umeå Akademic Choir)

Group 7 Geert Grote School 2004/2005- Noorse Bruiloft
Same song recorded last week at the GGS as a preparation for a coming net-cd
Pretty Wacked - RenadineTaken live from a radio broadcast 1980-ies. Isn't this beautifull?
Bonus track:
De Zingende Fresia's- Poep (The singing Freesias-Shit) "And I shout: shit, shit, shit! Shit is what I shout!"

Wilma: "But why can't you add this song after you've sent the PR-mail?". Jan: "You're right, why not?"

Berg and Burg at the library Zwolle

Berg & Burg - live at the city library of Zwolle today - Clementine (offline)

Toos Ligtenberg and Jan Turkenburg teaming up for the very first time and after hardly one hour of rehearsel early this morning. Jan left his microphone somewhere at a school and used the wrong settings for the spare mic, but a historical fact has been recorded and that's the most important thing.

Wow! A second theme: "Men of Action"

(music offline)
Man of action (The Les Reed Orchestra)
A lot of Dutchmen of my age and older know this as the Radio North Sea Tune. I must have heard it hundreds of times and I still think it's a great piece of music
Robin Hood (Nelson Riddle and his orchestra)
Probably better known outside of Holland
William Tell (Pee Wee Hunt)
Hertog Jan (The Shepherds)
"When Duke Jan came sailing..." Do I need to explain why I have allways liked this song and especially this rendition?
Ivan Hoe (Groot Kinderkoor olv Gert Nagtegaal & solisten) Boy, did I spent years looking for a recording of this song!
Lucky Luke (Tom Stone's (a)meezing kinderkoor) Yes, you may ask yourself, why this song is in this comp. I just couldn't resist. It's one of the worst kid's records in my collection and at the same time one of the most precious ... Produced in the Region of Zwolle. Listen carefully how "Lucky Luke" is pronounced by the majority of Dutchmen.
Floris At Kindergarten I would dress up as my TV-Hero Floris van Rosemondt during Carnival, in a suit my mother had sewed...
Prins de Parma (Camerata Trajectina) (historical dutch music)
De Eeuwige Soldaat (Universal Soldier) (Boudewijn de Groot) Boudewijn is one of The Netherlands' most respected popular singers. (I've got almost all his recordings) This however is one of his first and almost forgotten recordings, the B-side of his debut, the first and last year he recorded any covers.

Now guess what this weekend's theme is ...

(music offline)

Bojoura- Everything's alright
To me this is the most beautifull rendition of this song ever!

The Buffoons - Maria

Island - Super woman
(yes, a whole lotta song ;-)

Meet the Commanders with Eddy Grady Vol.1

Memory lane time! I got this EP from my father when I was a small kid, to get me acquainted with jazz. He had ordered it in the 1950ies at a small record shop together with some friends when he was a trombone student in Utrecht, after hearing it on the radio.
I liked this music very much. When I left the house when I was 21, dad let me keep it. I kept playing it every now and then and I even used "Meet the Brass" as a tune for a weekly show on the local radio of Haarlem and I learned they kept using it for a few years after I had left.

Vivian Stanshall & Friends - Live version of Jollity Farm (offline)

Labels:

Animals (5)

Splogman - Prr! (offline )

This is not a song of my own, I'm giving follow up lessons after singer-songwriter Jørn has performed his theatre piece at a school. Recording a song is a good way for me to memorize a song and since this is a song about scary, but eatable animals ...
