0. Splogman's offshore radio show

Week 18 of 52 was a radio program with "the sea" as theme. For this occasion it's downloadable for one week again. At the end of this broadcast I asked you to send in your own sound creations on the theme: "Water, wind and sails" And some of you actually did! When all these pieces were in, I had to write a foreword, but when I read the story underneath in "De Rode Leeuw" (The Red Lion, action magazine of the music academy in Zwolle) I realised the perfect story about the philosophy behind this project already existed. After some research I got in touch with the father of the eight year old author Vera Broek, who told me the girls agreed on using it here.
Janneke zegt bezorgt: zal ik even meehelpen?

The six fishes
In a country far away from here once lived six fishes. They are called: Jip, Janneke, Tim, Pim, Jaguus & Jelle. They had two little bosses: Vera and Merel. Vera was eight years old and Merel was fifteen. They looked after the fish well. One day Vera, Merel and the fishes went to an uninhabited island, the island was called Zaandam of Sri-lanka. When they arrived there was a very fat elephant in front of them. His tusks were at least one meter long!! And the fat elephant said with a heavy low voice: hello I've been expecting you. On the island they saw a camel walking around too, the camel is stupid and says: I won't tell you where the treasure lies! Now have you betrayed yourself, says Vera. Yes, Jip said, you have betrayed yourself. Yesssss! the other fishes replied in one voice. Then Vera strolled to the sea and saw a beautifull mermaid, her name is Fiësta. When Vera saw Fiësta the mermaid took a dive to hide herself. Vera started singing with her golden voice and the mermaid came closer slowly... Your singing is wonderfull, said Fiësta. Can you tell me where the treasure lies? Vera asks the beautiful mermaid, because the stupid camel won't say nothing at all. Yes, Fiësta says. How then? A bit further on is a cart with spirits. The camel loves salt water. So put salt water in a bowl with the spirits and then the camel will become drunk. Vera calls Merel and they put salt water in the bowl with spirits. The camel comes rapidly and curiously and drinks the whole lot. When the camel is finished it says: Aaahh I'm surely not going to tell you that the treasure lies at the second rock on the left overthere!! Hahaaaaa!!! But now Vera and Merel know that the treasure lies at the second rock on the left. They go there quickly and start to dig with a scoop which they have taken along, fish Jelle helps with diligence. Janneke says: shall I help as well? Jelle says: yes, gladly. When at last they've found the treasure there's a lock around it! Vera asks mermaid Fiësta for advice. Mermaid Fiësta speaks a short but powerful spell, whereupon the lock slides open smoothly. Thank you, Vera shouts enthusiastically. And Merel and the six fish all are very delighted and glad. When they look inside the treasure they see to their extreme stupefaction that there's a skeleton of a child in it?! And furthermore only money...! And you know what else? The golden crown which had been stolen from the king!! Well well! Talking about findings! Merel immediately phones to the Netherlands to tell what they have found, but they do not believe it! People in the Netherlands send a jet fighter to the uninhabited island Zaandam of Srilanka. When arrived they see nevertheless that Merel has spoken the truth! From now on Merel, Vera and the six fishes are the heroes of the universe!!! and they lived long and happily ever after.

03. Chenard Walcker - Old man river

Chenard Walcker was born and raised upon no secret formula but this one : Surrealist altruism. So, he became a cut and paste addict. He made his first steps in the visual field, but soon let aside photocollages to concentrate only on music. Chenardwalcker.com has been online since march 2003 and presents a large selection of his work as a samplecore artist, whatever this might mean.
Yann Chenard lives in la Goutte d'Or, Paris, France.

04. Toos Ligtenberg - wind in de rug (wind in my back)

Toos is a singer-songwriter. Recently she directed a self-written musical in a theatre in Zwolle. The recordings of this creation will hopefully be released soon. "Wind in my back" (click here for the translated lyrics) comes from Toos' first demo, filled with songs that have a strong autobiographical touch.

Learn more about Toos and listen to her demo cd at week 18 of 52
05. De Zwervende Keien - Camille's Aquarium

De Zwervende Keien (The Drifting Boulders) are Jan and Wilma Turkenburg. They've been a loving and musical couple for over thirteen years now. They used to perform on the streets, in cafés and in old people's homes, playing dutch folk songs and covers, but stopped doing that since Wilma is slowly but surely losing her hearing.
This is their interpretation of Camille Saint Saëns' Aquarium (from: Le carnaval des animaux). Wilma plays the piano and Jan plays one of the sets of tubular bells his father has made.
06. Weirdomusic - Drip drip drip

Weirdomusic is the nom-de-plume of 34 year old Marco Kalnenek from Heerlen, the Netherlands. The name was first used for his 1992 cassette release Someweirdomusic and is now the name of Marco's website Weirdomusic.com and all related musical activities. The "WM" in WM recordings comes from "weirdomusic"as well for Marco is the founder of this netlabel.
Marco appeared in week 26 and week 29 of 52 weeks.

More weirdomusic can be found here and probably soon on WM recordings
07. JJ - Familie op de boot (family on the boat)

JJ stands for Jelle-Jan. He is 14 years old, started composing, mixing, making radio shows and radio plays when he was 10 and never stopped. He plans on becoming an actor. What you hear is one episode of "The family", a series of plays featuring caricatures of people JJ really knows. In this part Grandpa tries to introduce everybody and explain to the listener that they're on a boat in heavy weather, but he can hardly make himself heard because of the wind and rain. Then "Little" decides to turn on some music which makes grandpa so angry that eventually everybody is thrown over board. When the boat hits an oil-tanker Little's alarm clock goes off and he steps out of bed to take a shower, because Grandpa and he are going for a ride in grandpa's new car today ...

JJ appeared on Splogman's world before with the first composition he ever recorded: Dreamer. An overview of JJ's work sofar will soon be released by WM recordings.
08. Lanark - Aguas en espiral

Lanark's motto is: All of we are fragments, and of a so diverse texture, that each piece plays, on every moment, its own game. (Michel de Montaigne)
Lanark's music behavior is similar. Each piece of sound makes a play on itself. Each has its own personality, which combines in an heterogeneous composition, that working as an unity, may be vastly different of the materials that conform it.

09. DJ Daan Jansen - Pinguin

Daan (14) already made his appearance in week 36 of 52 weeks with another version of this song with a few class mates, but since the lyrics were virtually his, he liked to make his own multi-track recording for this occasion. The melody based on a children song written by music teacher Huub de Vriend. (Huub de Vriend's latest project: www.muurgedichten.nl)
10. Dennis Hermanson and Richard Skidmore - Polar Icecaps

In the spring of this year a very enthusiastic e-mail arrived in the 52-weeks box. It was Dennis Hermanson who in spite of his not having any experience in creating music, wanted to give it a try in order to be part of this project.

Polar Icecaps is published by White Skull Music, bmi, and was written by Hermanson/Skidmore.

SKIDHERMANSONMORE is just another way the, not-a-band, partnership of Dennis Hermanson and Richard Skidmore could be represented in print. Polar Icecaps was recorded @ Do Studio on the island of Martha's Vineyard in nearly complete darkness, like a Norwegian winter's day, and is an imagined excursion with authentic northern chill.
11. The Sewing Circle - Three little Fishies     vocals by Marylin Rondy (R.I.P.)

"The Sewing Circle is 2 guys: Chase & Preston (they're cousins). All songs are recorded in Preston's bedroom. Studio time is a big waste of money.
As for Three Little Fishies, is actually one of our favourite tracks, and holds a tremendous amount of sentimental value to both of us. Marylin Rondy was our late grandmother. She passed away summer 2003. We were very fond of her - she had an unbeatable spirit and a lively sense of humor (Her bouncy vocal inflections throughout the track are evidence of this). We cannot, however, attach a specific date to this track -our guess would be somewhere between 1999 and 2001. Regardless, however, we would be sincerely honored if you were to use the song in the project."

12. DJ Harsman - Oerdvlieg

In may 2003 DJ Harsman was invited by Timo Mank as artist in residence at galery Dit Eiland, in Hollum, on the Dutch island Ameland.  Between may 15 and may 22, 2003, he roamed the island, by bus, on foot and on bicycle, collecting, with a dictaphone and MD, the sounds of Ameland. (...)
DJ Harsman composed "Oerdvlieg" using 5 island recordings made on Monday may 19th, 2003, on the eastern part of Ameland. He rehearsed it a couple of times, to get the timing and layering right. He then recorded it onto hard disk, in one single take, without overdubs.

14. Marcel, Jan & the Dutch Birds - At both sides of the river Moldau

Marcel van der Wulp and Jan Turkenburg first met when they both studied at the Music Academy in Zwolle. They became close friends very quickly. Here is their version of Bedrich Smetena's Moldau theme.

(Marcel and Jan are also responsable for the ghost track at the end of track 16)
15. Chenard Walcker - Water

As a contribution to this project Chenard Walcker sent in several works forming an EP of which two songs are now included on this compilation. The complete EP is released as "Rain" (WM 002) on WM recordings. Chenard also released some of his work at Comfort stand. All music is available in both the Free Sample Zone and the Internet Archive.
16. Ton Rückert - Walvis in de sterrenzee (Whale in a sea of stars)

Ton is our man in Venlo, The Netherlands. Amongst other things he did some gigs as a blues singer in the seventies. The flute is the only instrument he has seriously studied for 5 or 6 years, but illness got in the way and nothing happened musically until the early nineties when the synth arrived on the scene, and the drum machine and the sampler and the computer and so that's where he's still now, occasionally recording something or doing some sort of collage.
Ton curated week 34 of 52 weeks
